What it is actually like inside
It is a 1927 palace, not a modern arena. The decoration was described at the time as the motif of a French Renaissance palace, built around Mobile's coastal setting: Poseidon is cast above the front entrance, Dionysus sits above the proscenium, and the original color scheme was sea-green with maroon and gold trim. Ceilings carry trompe-l'oeil work.
Original capacity was 2,615. Around 1950 the floor seats were replaced and respaced, dropping it to about 2,200; today it is 1,921. The opera boxes that once sat beneath the organ grilles were removed when a larger Cinemascope screen went in, which improved sightlines. There is a mezzanine and a promenade.
It nearly did not survive. ABC/Paramount closed it in early 1970 and stripped the projection equipment ahead of demolition. The University of South Alabama bought it on the eve of demolition and reopened it as a performing arts center. The City of Mobile bought it in 1999, and the nonprofit Center for the Living Arts led a restoration reported at about six million dollars.
Buying tickets without overpaying

- If you land on a resale site, check that the event says Mobile, Alabama. The Saenger name is shared with theaters in New Orleans and elsewhere, and mixed-up listings are common.
- Compare the all-in price at checkout, not the headline price. Resale fees land at the end.
- For Mobile Symphony Orchestra dates, buying through the orchestra is usually the cleanest route.
Getting there
The theater sits on Joachim Street between Dauphin and Conti, in the Lower Dauphin Street Historic District. That is the walkable core of downtown Mobile, so plan to arrive early and park in the district rather than expecting a dedicated theater lot. This page does not list parking rates because they change and I have not verified current ones.
